For centuries, reading has been a staple of academia. While mathematics and the sciences are endlessly essential, reading and literature have held a special place in all forms of education throughout the years. It is through reading that we explore vast new worlds, encounter magical creatures, and experience unfathomable adventures. The written word allows us to share the mindset of different people from different times and different existences. There are so many things that reading does for us in our lives that it should come as no real surprise that reading can make you a better more successful person. These are the things that I have come to see in myself because of reading.
Stress Relief
Reading is a wonderful way to relieve some of the stress that builds throughout our busy days. When we read we are able to remove ourselves from our current situation. We enter a world that isn’t your own, forget our current situation, and assume an entirely new persona. This is the magic of fiction. Reading forces us to slow down. As our lives continue to become more and more fast paced and hectic, slowing down every now and then is essential. We can get so caught up in the things that need to be done every hour, that we forget to appreciate our lives and the things that we do. Stress can be an extremely debilitating thing. It’s hard to be truly productive or successful while endlessly worry about the next thing on the list—use reading as a way to release some of your stress. Take a step back, slow down, and enjoy a book. You may find that a little relaxation every now and again helps you become more productive during stressful times.
Heightened Creativity

It’s not hard at all to imagine how reading can inspire more creative thinking. What many people fail to recognize, however, is just how useful and important creativity truly is to our success. Because fiction writing is such a creative process, reading those novels and stories inherently involves exploring your own creativity. You have to have the creative spirit to allow yourself to enter that fictional world and devote yourself to those fictional characters. Reading inspires creativity and helps develop your ability to think in creative ways. Think kind of thinking can be endlessly valuable in the professional world. Individuals who can come up with creative solutions for things or who can look at things in a creative and unique way are extremely valuable to the business world.
Stronger Analytical Thinking Skills
Just as reading helps encourage creativity it also helps perfect analytical thinking tactics. Avid readers enter books that present different situations that require critical thinking methods to solve. We invest our mind to the plot that is unfolding on the pages in front of us. As new twists in the plot develop we create new solutions and resolutions for the plot in our mind. This analytical approach to problem solving is endlessly useful in the “real” world. Readers are practiced in noticing patterns in stories and situations. By spotting patterns more easily, we are better able to analyze a situation and determine likely outcomes. A huge aspect of success involves being conscious and aware of your surroundings and how to best maneuver in them. The heightened analytical thinking skills that reading provides us helps to make us more productive and successful in our everyday lives.
